Checksum primarily used to achieve below mentioned tasks

1.) To determine the programmed data integrity for a particular hex file.

2.) To identify the hex file programmed into a device by using unprotected
checksum in the user id location.

3.) To confirm if the device has been programmed properly in the production
houses.

4.) To keep track of an application developed for a particular microcontroller
in a development center.
